Policies & Procedures

PHLAS Sailing has established these policies with the goal of making its Summer Sailing Camp a safe and fun learning environment for all participants. We recommend that you review the information below with your child who will be participating in the camp program.

Refund Policy

Camp tuition is 90% refundable before June 1st. No exceptions. NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED ON OR AFTER THE DEADLINE OF JUNE 1st.

Swim Check

All Campers are required to perform a swim check on the first day of camp at the Herrington Harbor swimming pool. For Mini Mariners, this entails swimming the width of the pool with their PFD on. For Dinghy Campers, this entails swimming the width of the pool without a PFD, treading water for a minute, and instructors will teach campers how to put on a PFD while in the water. *Please inform Sailing Camp Staff if camper or child is especially uncomfortable in the water.*

Parent Sail

On Friday, we invite parents of Youth Dinghy Campers & Catamaran Campers to participate in a parent sail between 2:00pm-3:00pm where their camper can take them out on the water to showcase skills developed throughout the week.

Eye & Skin Protection

Exposure to the sun can cause severe sunburn or eye damage. Protection from the sun is as important as a PFD. Campers should apply sun block (at least SPF 15) and lip balm before arriving to camp, and bring extra to reapply throughout the camp day. A hat with a brim and properly filtered sunglasses with a lanyard are also strongly recommended.

Inclement Weather

If bad weather conditions occur, we will take cover in a large event tent located on site until the weather clears and we can safely return to the water. WE DO NOT CANCEL CAMP SIMPLY BECAUSE OF RAIN. Our staff may cancel a day or whatever session is deemed necessary for the safety of our campers in the event of extreme or unsafe weather conditions (hurricane, tropical storm etc.) in which camp days are not guaranteed to be made up as weather is completely out of our control.

Parent+Sailing Director Conference

If a parent has any concerns and would like to speak with PHLAS’s Sailing Director, please schedule a time to meet. Do not request a meeting or bring up your concerns during camp hours. To schedule, please send an email to the Sailing Director at : reservations@thesailingacademy.com or call our office at (410)-867-7177.

Other Important Reminders

  • Medication– If your camper is required to take medication while at camp, then all medication must be labeled with your camper’s name and put in a zip-lock bag, also marked with your camper’s name. If the medication requires refrigeration, please also provide a small cooler with ice, marked with your camper’s name on the cooler. All medication will be stowed out of reach of other campers
  • Food Allergies and/or Special Diet– Please let us know if your child has any food allergies and/or special diet. Each camper brings their own lunches, however it is important to know in case of emergency.
  • Candy– occasionally candy will be awarded to the campers for winning a race. If you do not want your camper to have any candy at camp, please let the Sailing Director know
  • Sea Nettles/Jelly Fish– not dangerous, but rather irritating. We have an anti-itch spray to alleviate any discomfort. Please inform an instructor if a sting is felt
  • Valuables– Please do not bring any valuable to camp. Although PHLAS staff keeps a close eye on our campers’ personal bags and water bottles, it’s a good idea to leave any valuables at home such as:
  • money
  • jewelry
  • keys
  • mobile phones

  • iPads
  • Laptops
  • hand-held gaming devices

Or anything else of great value.

PHLAS is not responsible for any personal items lost or stolen while at camp.

  • Responsible Behavior– no pushing, shoving, hitting, roughhousing/horseplay, jumping off the boats, no foul or inappropriate language (no swearing or cursing), making fun of other campers or fighting while at camp. Also, do not climb or sit on equipment located on site including sailboats, storage trailer, paddle board and kayak racks, etc.
  • Smoking, Drugs, and Alcohol are prohibited

We want all of our campers to have a fun, safe and memorable experience at camp!
